Eleusine tristachya, naturalised, New South Wales, Australia. Introduced, warm-season, annual, coarse, tufted grass to 40 cm tall. Stem bases are flattened and leaves are tough. Flowers in summer and autumn. A native of South America, it is found in disturbed areas such as gateways, paddock roads and tracks, stock yards, wasteland and cropping paddocks, especially after summer rain. An indicator of poor ground cover. Can be abundant in pastures with poor ground cover, but is uncommon in healthy pastures. Considered a weed as it has very low production and feed quality. Managed in pastures by minimising bare ground over summer. Difficult to kill with herbicides, but cultivation is effective.
