概要

この図は大気中の二酸化炭素 (CO₂) 濃度の過去40万年間の変遷を示している。

氷河期中の氷期・間氷期という周期的な大きな変化の成因には様々なものがあるが、この氷河期周期のもっとも直接的な要因になったのは地球軌道の変化（つまりミランコビッチ・サイクル）である。これらの変化は炭素循環にも影響を及ぼし、それがまた氷河にも影響を与えてきた。

1800年頃に始まった産業革命以降、化石燃料の使用が大気中の CO₂ を急激に増加させ、過去 40万年間にない空前の高濃度に達することとなる。この二酸化炭素の増加が地球温暖化の主因になっている。
