or brownish-black, ellipsoidal, somewhatreniform, nearly smooth and shining; odor aromatic, distinct;taste pungent and bitter. Powder.—Yellowish-brown; fragments of membranous pericarpcomposed of elongated, colorless and thin-walled cells; seeds blackishshiny, reniform, about 0.150 mm. in diameter; seed-coat with polyg-onal, thin-walled reddish-brown pigment cells; numerous starchgrains and small aleurone grains. Constituents.—From 0.6 to 1 per cent of a nearly colorless oryellowish volatile oil, having the odor and taste of the drug. It,consists of 45 to 70 per cent of an oxygenated compound, Ascaridol;22 per cent of p-Cymol; also a terpene and d-camphor. The leavesyield 0.35 per cent of volatile oil, and the fresh plant contains awhite, crystalline inodorous alkaloid, Chenopodine. It is an annual with oblong-lanceolate, nearlyentire or repand-toothed leaves and has densely flowered, leafyspikes. Microscopically it is characterized by possessing glandular 198 SCIENTIFIC AND APPLIED PHARMACOGNOSY hairs and numerous cells that are filled with microcrystals of calciumoxalate. The plant yields 0.33 per cent of a volatile oil having astrong aromatic odor and a bitter, pungent taste. The oil is usedin Brazil as a popular anthelmintic. The leaves of this plant yielda volatile oil having a repulsive, narcotic odor resembling trimethyl-amine.
